Nature experiences in Franconia

Franconia is a paradise for nature lovers. The region offers us a wide range of opportunities to experience nature up close.

Franconian Switzerland

We love hiking through the forests of Franconian Switzerland. The impressive rock formations and dense forests create a special atmosphere. There are numerous hiking trails that lead us to hidden places. We are particularly impressed by the peace and quiet that we find here.

The Altmühl Valley

Another highlight is the Altmühl Valley. We enjoy cycling along the Altmühl. The landscape is constantly changing. Sometimes we see rolling hills, sometimes steep limestone cliffs. Again and again we are treated to views of the river valley. Along the way we discover small villages that have retained their charm.

A current excursion tip from Franken Tourismus

Geological adventure tour in the Altmühltal Nature Park

On the GeoRadweg Altmühltal

Rock towers from prehistoric sea reefs, a huge meteorite impact crater, the site where the "primeval bird" was found, and a river that has dug its bed deep into the stone: On the Altmühltal GeoRadweg, cyclists between Nördlingen and Kelheim gain deep insights into the history of the earth. The new route, which will be officially opened on September 20, 2024, connects the region's geological highlights. Two tour variants, 201 and 182 kilometers long, can be combined to form a large circuit. Along the way, quiet sections over the Jura heights or through little-used side valleys alternate with stages in the Altmühltal. It goes through historic towns and hospitable places, where a cozy beer garden or a café always tempts you to stop for a break. The geo-sights along the route are also perfect for a stopover. Not all of them are as striking as the impressive Danube Gorge near Kelheim, the climbing rocks in the Wellheim Dry Valley or the Ries Crater. Special features that sometimes only become apparent at second glance - karst phenomena, glacial valleys or the biodiversity of the dry grassland - are clearly explained on information boards along the way. For those who prefer day trips, there are four suggested circular tours on the Altmühltal GeoRadweg. They all start at train stations and, with lengths between 54 and 87 kilometers, can easily be explored in one day with e-bikes.
