He has been working as a wine consultant in the hospitality industry for 18 years and has worked in various roles for Ritz Hotel, Social Eating House, Four Degree and Orwells. His recommendations can help you find good wineries in the UK.
"If you're looking to visit wineries in the UK, there are two main regions that stand out if you want to explore a variety of great wineries. The first and probably most well-known region in the UK is around Kent and Sussex. This area is located south of London towards the coast and is very accessible. It is home to some of the most renowned wineries in the country.
I would particularly recommend Gusbourne in Kent, which produces exceptionally elegant and refined sparkling wines, as well as a small but remarkable selection of still wines.
Then there is Balfour Winery, located in the Hush Heath Estate, also in Kent. They are often more experimental, focusing on sparkling wines, but also offer unique, stylized still wines.
Another highlight is Tillingham in East Sussex, east of Kent. Again, it's not far to get to and they offer something really special.
There are many other wineries in Kent and Sussex, from small to large, all producing high quality wines.
If you want to travel further west, you can head towards the south-east coast of the UK, to the regions of Devon and Cornwall. In Devon you will find wineries such as Lyme Bay, which is known for a wide range of wines and has a history that focuses more on still wines compared to other producers. Camel Valley is another highlight, offering high-quality sparkling wines with a distinctive style.
Finally, there is the Sharpham winery, also in Devon, near the River Dart. There they experiment with different grape varieties, some of which are quite unique in the region.
Overall, the UK offers a wide variety of wine experiences, with Kent, Sussex, Devon and Cornwall being the regions to visit for both sparkling and still wines.”
