Tulip Route in Holland or Keukenhof: Which is better for your spring outing?

Anyone wanting to experience the tulip bloom in Holland in spring will quickly find themselves with two options. You can visit Keukenhof and experience a landscaped flower park with established paths, pavilions, and a clear layout. Or you can drive a tulip route through the growing regions and see the fields out in the countryside.

Both have their charm. However, neither is equally suitable for every trip. Keukenhof is usually the better choice if it's your first time visiting the Netherlands for tulip season, you have limited time, or you're looking for a day trip that's easy to plan. A tulip route is often the more appropriate choice if you want more freedom, enjoy traveling by car or bicycle, and prefer to experience the blooms outdoors among fields, dikes, and small villages.

In this article, I will therefore not only show you beautiful routes, but also help you decide: Tulip Route or Keukenhof?

Tulip Route or Keukenhof: These questions will help you choose.

Do you want a clearly planned trip with fixed highlights? Or would you prefer to drive freely through the countryside and stop wherever you like the tulip fields best?

Is this your first time visiting the Netherlands for the tulip season? Then Keukenhof Gardens often seems easier. If you've been there before or are specifically looking for more peace and quiet, a tulip route is often a better fit.

Your mode of transport also plays a role. Visiting Keukenhof is usually easier without a car. A tulip route offers more freedom with a car or bicycle.

Keukenhof is a better fit for you if…

  • you are traveling to Holland for the first time to see the tulips in bloom
  • you are looking for a clearly planned trip with fixed opening hours
  • you want to see a lot even in changeable weather
  • you want to experience flowers not only in fields, but also in landscaped gardens

The Tulip Route is a better fit for you if…

  • you prefer being outdoors rather than in a crowded park
  • you want to experience the blossom in the landscape
  • You bring time for stops, small detours and your own photo spots
  • you want to make your spring day more free

The simplest way to summarize the difference is this: Keukenhof is the better choice for a well-organized day of tulips. The Tulip Route is more suitable if you want the journey itself to be part of the experience.

Which tulip route suits your trip?

Not every route is the same. Some are well-suited for a first-time visit to Holland. Others are better if you're looking for peace and quiet or want to stay on the move. That's precisely why it's worth asking not only about the most beautiful tulip fields, but also about which type of experience best suits your spring day.

Tulip route around Keukenhof: good if you want to combine park and fields

If you'd like to experience the tulip bloom beyond the park, not just visit Keukenhof, the route around Lisse is a great starting point. It combines a clearly planned visit to the park with exploring the fields of the Bollenstreek (bulb region). This is especially suitable if it's your first time in the area and you want to combine both in one day or over a weekend.

This route is less suitable if you prefer peace and quiet. The area around Lisse is very busy in spring, and on sunny days you quickly realize you're in the most famous tulip region in the Netherlands.

The advantage lies in the ease of planning. Keukenhof is open from March 19th to May 10th in spring 2026. If you want to include it in your trip, early planning is recommended. It will be even more crowded around Lisse during the Bloemencorso weekend.

Getting there: Amsterdam is a good starting point. From there you can reach Lisse by rental car or public transport.

Hotel recommendation: The Hotel Van der Valk Sassenheim-Leiden* It is strategically located and is well suited if you want to combine Keukenhof and tulip fields.

Tulip Route in Flevoland: better if you're looking for wide open spaces and less hustle and bustle.

Flevoland is the better choice if you want to experience the tulip bloom not in a park, but out in the open countryside. The routes lead through large growing areas, and the views of the fields often appear more expansive than around Lisse. This makes Flevoland ideal for those traveling by car or who are specifically looking for a quieter spring day.

Here you need to plan more yourself. Unlike Keukenhof, there's no set route; instead, you shape your day as you go. That's precisely what makes it so appealing, but it also requires a bit more time and flexibility.

Getting there: Almere or Lelystad are good starting points, especially if you are traveling by car.

Hotel recommendation: Leonardo Hotel Almere City Center* It's a good base if you want to start early and drive the route without rushing.

Tulip route through North Holland: perfect if you want to combine tulips with the coast.

The route through North Holland from Alkmaar to Den Helder feels different from the area around Lisse. Here, you combine tulip fields with dunes, small towns, and proximity to the sea. This makes this route particularly interesting if you want to do more than just see flowers and instead enjoy a varied spring day.

It's less suitable if you're specifically aiming to visit the most famous tulip spots. However, it often feels more relaxed and offers a wider, more expansive landscape. Those who enjoy experiencing Holland outdoors and on the move will often find this route more appealing than the heavily frequented core area around Keukenhof.

Getting there: Alkmaar is easily accessible by train or car and is a good starting point.

Hotel recommendation: The Grand Hotel Alkmaar* It's centrally located and a good fit if you want to combine the route with a stay in the city.

Cycling through the Bollenstreek: ideal if the journey itself is meant to be your spring excursion.

The Bollenstreek route between Haarlem and Leiden is a great choice if you want to experience the tulip bloom at a leisurely pace. You perceive the fields differently from a bicycle than from a car. You cycle through the countryside, stopping spontaneously and lingering longer wherever a stretch of road or a place particularly appeals to you.

This type of experience works well if you're not looking for a full day of sightseeing. It's less suitable in very changeable weather or if you want to see as much as possible in a short time. In that case, Keukenhof is a simpler option.

Getting there: Haarlem and Leiden are both easily accessible by train. You'll find bike rentals in both locations.

Hotel recommendation: The Boutique Hotel Staats in Haarlem* This is ideal if you want to plan your tour without a car.

Our personal experiences: Why the Tulip Route and Keukenhof feel so different

The difference is more noticeable in person than in photos. At Keukenhof, you move through a landscaped park. Paths, flowerbeds, and sightlines are deliberately designed. This is impressive, especially on a first visit, but it feels different than a drive or bike ride through the vineyards.

The charm of a tulip route unfolds more fully along the way. You stop when a stretch of road catches your eye and take in the blooms along with the wind, the open spaces, and the charming little villages. That's precisely why we wouldn't base your choice solely on where the tulips are most beautiful. The more important question is how you want to experience this spring day.

Our personal recommendation: If this is your first time visiting the Netherlands for tulip season, Keukenhof is often the easier starting point. If you've been there before or are specifically looking for more peace and quiet, a tulip route is usually the better choice.

Questions and answers about the decision between the Tulip Route and Keukenhof

Which is better for a first visit during tulip season: Keukenhof or the Tulip Route?

If this is your first time visiting the Netherlands for tulip season, Keukenhof is often the easier option. It has fixed opening hours, clearly marked paths, and you can see many varieties in a relatively small area. A tulip route is more suitable if you want to experience the blooming flowers in the open countryside and prefer more flexibility in planning your day.

Is a tulip route quieter than the Keukenhof?

Often, yes. Especially in Flevoland or parts of North Holland, visitors are more spread out. At Keukenhof itself, the experience is more tightly planned, but therefore also more crowded, particularly on weekends and during peak bloom.

Can the Keukenhof be combined with a tulip route?

Yes, especially in the Bollenstreek region around Lisse. That works well if you're planning a weekend trip or traveling by car. For a single, relaxed day trip, however, it might be more practical to choose one or the other.

Which option is better without a car?

Keukenhof is usually easier to visit without a car. A combination of train, bus, and bicycle works well for the Bollenstreek (bulb region). Flevoland and longer routes through North Holland are generally easier to explore by car.

When is the best time for a tulip route in Holland?

It depends on the weather in spring. Around Keukenhof and in the Bollenstreek region, the peak season is usually between mid-April and the end of April. In Flevoland, it's worth checking the current route information before your trip, as the exact start of the season depends on the development of the blossoms.

  1. I prefer the more secluded tulip fields around Beerta near the German-Dutch border, which are similarly impressive but nowhere near as crowded as those along the Tulip Route or in Keukenhof & Co. But overall, a great destination!
