Travel for connoisseurs all over the world

What exactly constitutes a gourmet trip? Great question! We've been traveling the world under this motto for years and would like to share our understanding with you. For TravelWorldOnline, gourmet travel means more than just culinary experiences, although good food, a pleasant restaurant, and a beautiful atmosphere are certainly part of it.

If you'd like to delve deeper into how we understand travel, you'll find further insights and examples from our own experiences on our overview pages about Slow Travel and Enjoyment:

What are trips for connoisseurs?

First and foremost, enjoyable travel for us means feeling good on our trips. Fellow travel bloggers define it this way: completely! A whole range of factors influence our personal well-being, some of which we can control ourselves, and some of which are externally controlled.

On our trips, we take care to choose accommodations that make them truly enjoyable experiences. We place particular emphasis on the following points:

Delicious food
Delicious food

Good food and culinary experiences

Of course, food plays a role in our style of travel. It has to be good, and it also has to introduce us to the regional cuisine of our destinations.

We enjoy dining in Michelin-starred restaurants just as much as eating at a roadside kiosk – the crucial factor is that we like the food. We especially enjoy taking the time for culinary experiences that introduce us to the specialties of the region.

The skill guided tours through our destinations be. But there are more ways in which we can find out more about the cuisine of our travel destination. We have already had very interesting experiences. In Sweden I learned how to make Polkagrisar - Swedish candy canes – manufactures itself.

In Salzburg we have cooked with a star chef, At an oystercatcher in Canada we have the Crustaceans fresh from the sea tried. And in New Brunswick we learned how to eat a lobster properly, You can find tips for culinary experiences all over the world in the Podcast The Dish from Meg Williams (with great tips in English).

A look behind the scenes of the producers

We enjoy observing producers' work during our travels. This gives us the opportunity to learn more about the region's specialties. It also has the added benefit of allowing us to engage in conversation with local people. We've become aware of how many opportunities there are for this since we started reporting on it in our blog.

That's how I learned in Dublin, How to pour a Guinness properly, In Newfoundland we have the fruit wines which are made from fruits that I had never heard of before our visit. And in Volkach in Franconia we were at the Opening of the vintage there.

Culinary trips

A major component of enjoyable travel is culinary tourism. This has become a very popular form of travel among millennials. Their children – Generation Z – are even said to place greater emphasis on food and drink experiences during their travels. No wonder! After all, they come from the generation that made food travel such a significant form of travel.

Interestingly, it's not just about good food and cool drinks. For the younger generation of travelers, it's particularly important that these experiences are accompanied by local and authentic ones.

Exactly what the world needs right now: a sustainable approach to travel. Because this kind of travel demands one thing above all: time to engage with the experiences you have on the ground. Not just ticking off highlights, but a personal immersion in the local lifestyle.

Slow Travel - slowly explore the world

We're not globetrotting travelers trying to see the world in a year. On the contrary, we love focusing on one region and discovering its people, their way of life, the natural beauty, and the unique aspects of its culture. That doesn't mean we limit ourselves to one continent, or only to one. Foot, with the Cars or the Houseboat on the way are. Whether we Cities or a spending time outdoors touring. No!

Instead, we like to limit ourselves to an area that we explore more closely. We are looking for contacts to natives - for example, in the already described experiences or at Activities that stimulate our creativity to encourage dialogue and learn more about local life. Slow Travel in Bavaria We've experienced this many times before.

As far as transportation is concerned, we're open to anything as long as it doesn't require physical exertion. We've never been adrenaline junkies, and I've certainly never been a sports enthusiast. For us, our travels are about intense experiences.

Nice landscapes

Nature experiences, cultural and city trips

Regions and cities that appeal to the senses promise a truly enjoyable experience. Landscapes whose beauty overwhelms us. Museums whose exhibitions inspire us. Cultural events that move us. Cities that take our breath away – these are all destinations that promise pure enjoyment.

Toronto with its many ethnic groups is a must for us, as we can go there on the hunt for delicacies from all over the world. Traveling with pleasure in cities is at the same time a tour through the kitchens of the ethnic groups who live there.

What are travels for connoisseurs? This includes wellness

For us, feeling completely at ease includes wellness. We don't need a wellness hotel every day. But after a long journey, a hike, or a stroll through the city, we appreciate a wellness experience.

That's one of the reasons why we love traveling to Sweden so much. Wellness is part of everyday life there. I fondly remember our stay at... Spa by Hooks Herrgard. There we looked from the pool of the house directly on the lake. What could be better than pampering yourself?

Cozy hotels for a delightful evening

During the day, we're almost always on the go when we travel. Sightseeing, city tours, out and about, or cooking in the kitchens of other chefs. That's why we appreciate a comfortable room all the more in the evening. There, we can stretch out and reflect on the day's experiences. It doesn't always have to be a four- or five-star hotel.

We often enjoy stays even more in accommodations that offer a magnificent view – such as... the Hotel Grafenast with its view of the Inn Valley – or a cozy and well-equipped Apartment that offers privacy, Sometimes we feel more comfortable in such accommodations than in luxury hotels with over-skilled staff.

What is travel with pleasure? On our travels, we seek out places that awaken well-being. They must provide us with enjoyable experiences. That's a brief summary of what's important to us on our travels.

Culinary travel destinations around the world

Delights from the region

At TravelWorldOnline you'll find a list of the world's gourmet travel destinations that we recommend. Whether you want to travel to Canada or through Germany, any time of year – summer or winter – we've got you covered. On our travels, we seek out culinary experiences, routes for gourmets, and cities that promise a truly indulgent experience.

We define the term "enjoyment" quite broadly. Our destinations can offer delights for the palate as well as for the eyes and ears. When making our selection, we place importance on recommending regional specialties. These can be dishes that are typical of the destination.

We're looking for restaurants that offer a gourmet experience. But they can also be places where you can learn more about how a region's products are produced.

Gourmet travel tips: Bring time

Delights for the eyes

At the same time, we find joy in exploring nature, which awakens the senses. As slow travelers, we seek destinations that invite leisure. You won't find hiking, mountaineering, or adrenaline-pumping activities in our travel tips. Instead, we look for places that offer relaxation.

We present experiences that promise a break from everyday life. You don't need to embark on a multi-day hike to enjoy a landscape. A picnic on a bench with a view of the mountains or a lake is just as rewarding. All you need is time and leisure.

We also include wellness experiences in our list. Spending a few days relaxing in a wellness retreat is reason enough for us to include it in our list of gourmet travel destinations.

Delights for the ears

Last but not least, we include music and theater among our culinary travel destinations. There are places where concerts and plays are presented in venues that make them a truly enjoyable experience. These can be festivals, or they can be concerts set against a breathtaking backdrop. When selecting these culinary travel destinations, our aim is to primarily recommend events that offer a truly special experience.

Gourmet travel destinations: Culinary highlights for gourmets

Travel and good food go hand in hand. There's hardly a better way to get to know a culture than through its cuisine. From wine regions in Europe to spicy street food markets in Asia and exotic dishes in South America – culinary experiences make travel truly special. Here are some of the best destinations for food lovers worldwide.

gourmet regions in Europe

France – Gourmet tours through Bordeaux, Provence & Alsace

France is a paradise for gourmets. Each region offers its own culinary products, from fine wines to delicious cheeses.

In Bordeaux, everything revolves around wine. Here you can, for example, stroll through endless vineyards and taste fine wines like the famous Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot at wineries. These are complemented by regional dishes such as duck confit or canelés, small caramelized cakes.

Provence, on the other hand, entices visitors with Mediterranean flavors. Fresh herbs, lavender honey, and the famous bouillabaisse make this region the perfect destination for gourmets. A visit to a market, where you can sample olives, cheeses, and freshly baked baguettes, is particularly impressive.

In Alsace, you can expect hearty dishes like tarte flambée, sauerkraut, and fine white wines such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Strasbourg and Colmar alike entice visitors with narrow streets where you can linger in cozy wine taverns.

Whether wine, cheese or fine patisserie – a gourmet journey through France is a feast for all the senses.

Italy – culinary journeys through Tuscany, Piedmont & Emilia-Romagna

Italy is a dream destination for gourmet travel. The variety of regional products makes it difficult to choose a region - but some stand out in particular.

Tuscany is primarily known for its excellent wines, especially Chianti. It's often accompanied by Pecorino cheese and fresh olive oil, as well as the succulent Bistecca alla Fiorentina. A visit to a Tuscan estate, where you can taste the products directly from the producer, is one of the unforgettable experiences of a culinary journey.

In Piedmont, on the other hand, it's all about exquisite ingredients. Here you'll find, among other things, the white truffles of Alba, accompanied by a glass of Barolo or Barbaresco. The cuisine is hearty, with dishes like Tajarin (homemade egg pasta) or Vitello tonnato. In autumn, during truffle season, Piedmont truly becomes a paradise for gourmets.

Emilia-Romagna is the home of Parmigiano Reggiano, Aceto Balsamico di Modena, and the famous mortadella. Here you can enjoy pasta dishes like tagliatelle al ragù (the authentic Bolognese). A visit to Bologna or Modena is a must for anyone wanting to experience the culinary soul of Italy.

Austria – Gourmet tours through Vienna, the Wachau & Styria

Austria offers a mixture of fine cuisine as well as down-to-earth dishes.

In Vienna, you can experience, among other things, the famous coffee house culture. Here you can enjoy a Melange (Viennese coffee) with a slice of Sachertorte or apple strudel. But hearty dishes like Wiener Schnitzel or Tafelspitz (boiled beef) are also highlights of a culinary trip.

The Wachau, on the other hand, is one of the most beautiful wine regions in Europe. Along the Danube, some of Austria's best white wines grow, including the fruity Riesling and the spicy Grüner Veltliner. These pair perfectly with Wachau apricot dumplings or a slice of poppy seed strudel.

Styria is famous for its pumpkin seed oil, which lends a nutty flavor to many dishes. In the region around Graz, you can sample traditional Styrian snacks such as Brettljause (a cold platter) featuring bacon, scarlet runner beans, and Styrian cheese. The wines from Southern Styria, especially the Sauvignon Blanc, are also a real insider tip.

Germany – a culinary journey through Bavaria, the Moselle and the Black Forest

Germany has much more to offer in terms of cuisine than bratwurst and sauerkraut.

In Bavaria, you can expect hearty cuisine. A typical snack of pretzels, Obatzda (a Bavarian cheese spread), and white sausage tastes best in a beer garden. All of this is accompanied by a freshly tapped wheat beer.

The Moselle, on the other hand, is one of Germany's oldest wine regions. Here, everything revolves around Riesling, which grows on the steep slopes of the river valleys. A wine tasting in Bernkastel-Kues or Traben-Trarbach will allow you to discover the diversity of these fine wines.

The Black Forest is also a paradise for gourmets. The famous Black Forest cherry cake originates here, as does Black Forest ham. In the quaint inns, you can also find hearty dishes such as venison ragout with Spätzle.

Portugal – Culinary journeys through the Douro Valley, Lisbon and Alentejo

Portugal has established itself as a top destination for gourmet travel in recent years.

The Douro Valley is famous for its port wine. In the picturesque vineyards along the river, you can often taste this fine wine directly from the producer. Regional specialties such as bacalhau (salt cod) or hearty meat dishes are frequently served alongside.

In Lisbon, you absolutely must try the famous Pastel de Nata. These little custard tarts are a must for every visitor. The fresh seafood, with dishes like sardines, octopus, or grilled dourada, is also a culinary highlight.

The Alentejo region, on the other hand, is still a hidden gem. Here, everything revolves around robust red wines, olive oil, and Iberico ham. Many small wineries also offer tastings where you can sample the region's finest wines.

Spain – Gourmet trip through Andalusia, Catalonia & the Basque Country

Spain is another paradise for foodies. From tapas and seafood to top-quality wines, there is something to suit every taste.

In Andalusia, much revolves around sherry, olive oil, and hearty tapas. In Jerez, you can sample fine sherry wines directly from the bodegas. Seville is famous for its tapas bars, where you can enjoy classics like Jamón Ibérico, Gambas al Ajillo, or Patatas Bravas.

Catalonia is famous for its Cava production, the Spanish sparkling wine. In Barcelona and the surrounding area, you can not only participate in tastings but also discover the diversity of Catalan cuisine – from pintxos to the famous Crema Catalana.

In the Basque Country, San Sebastián is a mecca for gourmets. The city boasts one of the highest densities of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. But you can also sample small culinary works of art in traditional pintxos bars, often accompanied by a glass of Txakoli, the region's crisp white wine.

gourmet regions worldwide

USA – Gourmet trip through California, New England & New York

The USA offers an impressive culinary diversity. In California, you can enjoy particularly excellent wines and fresh Pacific cuisine, while New England delights with seafood and rustic specialties, and New York boasts an unparalleled food scene.

California is also the center of the farm-to-table movement. Napa Valley and Sonoma County, in particular, are famous for their wines, often paired with regional specialties such as artisan cheeses.

In San Francisco, you should definitely try fresh Dungeness crab and clam chowder in sourdough bread. Los Angeles, on the other hand, boasts a multicultural street food scene, from Mexican tacos to Asian fusion dishes.

In New England, seafood is a major focus. Lobster rolls from Maine are particularly famous, featuring fresh lobster served in butter or mayonnaise on a brioche bun. In Boston, creamy clam chowder is a must-try, while Rhode Island is known for its fried mussels.

New York is another paradise for food lovers. From classic New York cheesecake and authentic Brooklyn pizza to top-notch steakhouses, the city offers countless culinary highlights. You can also find pastrami sandwiches in the delis, while the food markets serve dishes from all over the world.

Whether west coast or east coast – a gourmet trip through the USA is full of exciting taste experiences.

Canada – Travel for connoisseurs through Quebec and the Okanagan Valley

Canada is not only known for its breathtaking nature, but also for its exciting, often underrated cuisine.

In Quebec, you can enjoy French-inspired delicacies, among other things. Poutine – fries with gravy and cheese – is a true classic. Maple syrup also plays a major role: In spring, you can try fresh syrup poured over crepes or bacon at the "sugar shacks."

The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia is one of North America's finest wine regions. Here you'll find award-winning wineries, primarily known for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These are complemented by fresh, regional produce such as Pacific salmon and game from the surrounding forests.

South Africa – A culinary journey through Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route

South Africa combines African, European, and Asian influences to create a unique cuisine.

Cape Town is definitely the culinary center of the country. Here you can enjoy fresh fish in the harbor restaurants or try exotic street food specialties like bunny chow or bobotie at the markets.

The Winelands around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are world-famous for their wines. The Cape Dutch wineries also offer tastings, often paired with fine cheeses or game.

The Garden Route also offers a wealth of culinary experiences, from fresh oysters in Knysna to wild game braais (South African barbecues). Here you can also visit sustainable farms that produce organic wine or olive oil.

Unique culinary experiences – unforgettable gastronomic adventures

Travel for connoisseurs is more than just good food. Often it's the special experiences that make a trip unforgettable.

  • Truffle hunting in Italy or France: Strolling through the forests with a truffle dog and tasting the precious tubers right on site.
  • Street food tours in metropolises: From Bangkok to Lisbon – street food markets are the perfect place to discover authentic dishes.
  • Wine and cheese tastings: Sample directly at the winemaker's or cheesemaker's and learn more about the production process.
Cooking classes with top local chefs: Learn how to prepare a real Italian risotto or a Spanish paella.

These experiences make a gourmet trip special – because they touch not only the palate, but also the soul.

Sustainable Enjoyment – Traveling with Responsibility

Leisure travel should not come at the expense of the environment or the local people. Fortunately, there are more and more ways to enjoy sustainable travel.

  • Farm-to-table concepts: Restaurants that source their ingredients directly from local farmers reduce transport distances and support small businesses.
  • Organic wineries & sustainable fishing: More and more wineries are focusing on organic production. When buying fish, you should look for sustainability labels.
  • Fair trade and local products: Fair trade coffee or handmade chocolate from small manufacturers are often the better choice.
  • Enjoy plastic-free dining: When traveling, you can take a reusable water bottle or order street food without single-use packaging.

Sustainable enjoyment means traveling consciously and supporting authentic, local products – for a better travel experience and a better world.

Tips for perfect trips for gourmets

    1. The way of traveling does not have much to do with age, I think. I have never been a backpacker but have traveled a lot all my life :). I would be pleased, if you like some of our enjoyment travel destinations.
