What can you do in Landshut?
What can you do in Landshut? That is the question we ask ourselves before we visit the city on the Isar. Landshut is one of the most beautiful cities in BavariaIt offers a townscape reminiscent of the Middle Ages with St. Martin's Church and Trausnitz Castle, which sits on a hill above the town.
This is a cityscape that is worth exploring. We set off spontaneously on an autumn day in October to take a closer look at the city. Buildings decorated in autumn to see.

The Gothic city
Even along the motorway, Landshut advertises itself as the "Gothic city", and it owes this advertising slogan not only to the church in the Brick Gothic style with the tallest brick tower in Germany (130 meters), which repeatedly draws our gaze upwards.
The houses along the pedestrian zone in the city center have already survived for centuries and are so well maintained by their inhabitants that the city looks freshly cleaned.

Landshut tips for the old town
What can you do in Landshut? The best place to start a city tour through Landshut is at the car park on Wittstrasse. From there you can already see Trausnitz Castle and the spire of St. Martin's Church. We leave these to the right for now and walk through the green areas along the Isar.
A walking path runs along the shore under deciduous trees, offering repeated views of the tower of St. Martin's Church and Trausnitz Castle.
Even more delightful, however, is the gurgling of the Isar River beside us and the ducks that swim past, quacking without any fear. We stop again and again, drawn by the views and photo opportunities.

Landshut old town tour
Immediately behind the city theater we turn right and follow Theaterstraße through the Ländtor. It is one of Landshut's city gates from the 14th century city fortifications that still exists today. Cars still come towards us here, but just a few steps further on the pedestrian zone begins, which keeps part of the old town car-free.
As we turn the corner, the tower of St. Martin's Church rises up in front of us. It is so high that we can see it almost all the time on our walk.
When we finally stand before it, its height impresses us even more. Daniela Schetar's guidebook to Eastern Bavaria even states that structural engineers have calculated that this brick tower shouldn't actually be standing.
He has been doing this for a very long time. Construction on this Gothic church began in 1385.

Market stalls and cafes in the old town
In Landshut's old town, market stalls offer local traders and farmers their produce. From Monday to Thursday, the Schwaigermarkt takes place here, selling vegetables, fruit, and flowers. Cafe tables are also available throughout the area, inviting visitors to linger.
We postpone our lunch a little longer and decide to take a closer look at the Gothic St. Martin's Church. As soon as we enter the nave, our breath catches. It's not just the tower of this church that is breathtakingly high.
What can you do in Landshut?

Visit Trausnitz Castle
A visit to Trausnitz Castle is worthwhile for the view of the city of Landshut from the castle hill alone. The castle rises directly above the old town. There is a viewpoint overlooking Landshut in the castle garden.
This was once the castle park, but was opened to the public in 1837. Since then, it has been a popular place for walks.
The castle is also accessible and can be visited. More information about opening times and guided tours can be found at Burg Trausnitz website.
What do you need for a trip to Landshut?
- You will be walking a lot on foot in Landshut. Therefore are comfortable shoes are important.
- Don't forget comfortable pumps not, because you can dine elegantly in some restaurants in Landshut.
- We also like to take a [missing word] for city tours backpack with where we put everything we need for the day. There is also space for one or the other souvenir.
Visit St. Martin
The sight of the long, slender columns, 29 meters high, makes us feel tiny in this church building, which otherwise initially appears rather unadorned.
Only upon closer inspection do we discover the interesting gravestones of former dignitaries of the city, the exposed frescoes above one of the side entrances, which were discovered during renovation work.
I find the wrought iron portals, which lead to small side chapels at the rear of the nave, beautiful.

On the tour of the church, I notice the carved pews and a confessional with woodwork. The Gothic stone altar looks almost inconspicuous under the huge nave. This one has only in 19. Century rediscovered under a baroque superstructure.
Information about tours and guided tours can be found at St Martin's Basilica website.

Bavarian specialties in the Augustiner at the St. Martins church
Our tour of the interior of the church finally made us hungry, and we interrupt our visit to St. Martin with a typical Bavarian Lunch at the Augustiner beer hall next to St. Martin's Church.
The Munich brewery is obviously doing good business with churchgoers, because we just managed to grab the last free table.
With a refreshing shandy, a Bavarian sausage salad for Petar and autumnal creamed mushrooms with bread dumplings for me, our hunger is soon satisfied and we listen to our table neighbor explaining the advantages of Bavarian cuisine to his companion in flawless English with a Bavarian accent.
He apparently can't completely convince her, because she very cautiously chooses a beef broth and White sausages with cabbage.

Tour of St. Martin's Church
After this entertaining lunch break, we continue our tour of St. Martin's Church and discover a magnificent Gothic side entrance, a small chapel and other memorial stones for notables and dignitaries of the city of Landshut.

Trausnitz Castle
From the back of the church, we finally look up at Trausnitz Castle, which rises on the hill above us. At the foot of the hillside stand several old but beautifully maintained small houses around a tree-lined square, giving this corner of Landshut an almost village-like character.
Only when we step through the gate that separates the church tower from the neighboring house do we perceive Landshut again as what it is – the largest city in Lower Bavaria.

The facade of the landscaped house is striking.
Back on the main street through the old town, we finally come across a house with a particularly striking facade: the Landschaftshaus (Landscape House). Its front is decorated with portraits of the great Wittelsbach rulers. From King Ludwig the Bavarian to Elector Maximilian I, all are represented.
This building once served as the meeting place of the state parliament. Today, every other person passing by pulls out their mobile phone for a quick snapshot.
On our way back to the parking lot, we pass the remains of the old city wall and a house in a small side street where the building guilds once went about their work.
Landshut is a city where history can still be felt: in the Gothic brick church, but also in the old residential buildings, the city gates and the remains of the city wall, which we discovered on this tour. In this article we have shown you what you can do in Landshut.

It's almost funny. Your description reads as if you were there during my visit. Last October (2019) I made a stop in the city and discovered exactly the same things - just got hoid an Schweinsbratn gessn in the Auguschtiner :-)
It was a big coincidence that you were also in the Augustinian. We visited one of the cafes in the old town before our visit, so there was not enough space for a roast pork :). But next time, definitely.
St. Martin has the sixth highest church tower in Germany, worldwide it is thirteenth
Place, but it is the tallest brick tower in the world!
Thank you for the explanation.
