Questions and answers about excursion destinations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

How can you experience the peace and seclusion of the Mecklenburg Lake District?

If you really want to immerse yourself in nature, canoe trips or hikes off the main paths are ideal. Many of the smaller lakes are almost deserted, so you can enjoy complete peace and quiet there. An overnight stay in one of the numerous nature reserves in small holiday homes or on campsites reinforces this feeling of isolation and closeness to nature. Cycling along the endless riverside paths is also an ideal way to soak up the peaceful atmosphere.

When is the best time to visit the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve?

The Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve is particularly at its most beautiful in spring and autumn. This is when wildlife viewing is at its most intense, as many migratory birds are resting or the local wildlife is waking from hibernation. The colors of the autumn leaves are reflected impressively in the clear waters of the Schaalsee, while in the warmer months you can experience nature in full bloom. These seasons also offer a pleasant climate for hikes and bike tours.

Which historical places should you not miss in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania?

In addition to the well-known Hanseatic cities, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offers numerous smaller, often lesser-known places with a great history. Burg Stargard is one such place, where you can travel back in time to the Middle Ages in one of the oldest preserved castles in northern Germany. Ludwigslust Castle, with its extensive gardens and impressive baroque architecture, also gives you a deep insight into the region's cultural past.

Are there any special culinary experiences you should try in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania?

The proximity to the Baltic Sea and the many lakes have a strong influence on the regional cuisine. Fish lovers will get their money's worth here - freshly caught zander, pike or eel from the inland waters or the famous smoked fish straight from the coast are among the highlights. In the small, often family-run restaurants you can also enjoy regional specialties such as Mecklenburg rib roast or the region's hearty potato specialties. The combination of traditional cuisine and local ingredients ensures an authentic taste experience.

What insider tips are there for a visit to the island of Usedom?

Usedom is known for its long sandy beaches and elegant imperial spas, but there is a lot to discover off the beaten track. In the hinterland you will find quiet fishing villages where time seems to have stood still. A trip to the Gnitz peninsula offers you untouched nature and idyllic hiking trails. A bike tour along the Achterwasser, which lies on the back of the island, also offers a completely different view of the island, away from the typical beach holiday.
