Cape Town tips for getting there

Cape Town is easily accessible and getting there is straightforward. For example, there are many Flight connections* (advertisement) that offer direct flights from Europe to Cape Town. Stopovers in cities such as Dubai or Doha are also possible if you want to make a short stopover.

After landing at Cape Town Airport, various transportation options are available to get into the city. Taxis are a convenient option as they are available directly at the airport. However, I recommend booking a transfer in advance to save time and avoid stress. Alternatively, you can also use a rental car as it gives you the flexibility to explore the Cape Town area on your own. The MyCiTi bus is also a good option as it connects the airport to different parts of the city and is a cost-effective option.

I have some tips for a stress-free start to your trip. Pack your carry-on baggage carefully so that all important documents, such as passport and booking confirmations, are ready to hand. Be sure to allow enough time for check-in and security checks. Nothing is more stressful than rushing through the airport at the last minute. Make sure you have plenty of drinks and snacks with you, especially on long flights.

When you arrive in Cape Town, take your time to arrive and acclimatise. The first day should therefore be relaxed in order to recover from the trip. A walk on the beach or a cozy evening in one of the many cafes is the perfect way to get into vacation mode. So the trip to Cape Town begins stress-free and relaxed.

How many days should you plan for Cape Town?

For the best length of stay in Cape Town, I recommend at least 7-10 days. This time span allows you to fully experience the city and its surroundings. You can visit the most important sights and also go on spontaneous excursions.

When planning your time, you should plan to see the highlights of Cape Town. Table Mountain is a must, as a hike or a ride on the cable car offers spectacular views. The V&A Waterfront is also an important place. Here you can shop, eat and visit the aquarium. Robben Island is a historically significant place. A guided tour there tells a lot about the history of apartheid.

In addition to the well-known sights, you should also plan time for spontaneous discoveries. A walk through the Bo-Kaap district with its colorful houses is always worthwhile. It's also worth spending a day in the Winelands. A visit to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is also a lovely way to experience nature.

Flexibility is important to truly enjoy Cape Town. You should be open to spontaneous excursions. An unexpected trip to a market or a relaxing day at the beach can enrich the trip. It's also good to set aside time for relaxing activities. A day at the beach or an afternoon in a café gives you the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of the city.

Accommodation options in Cape Town

Cape Town offers numerous accommodation options. You can find boutique hotels as well as guest houses, which are often charming and individually designed. These accommodations offer personal service and a warm atmosphere. For example, I have good experiences with the Waterfront hotels. They are centrally located and there are accommodations for every budget.

Alternatively, you can also book via Airbnb. Private accommodation with locals offers the opportunity to experience local life up close. You often get insider tips and get to know the city from a different perspective. I once stayed with a family in Woodstock. It was exciting to experience the district so authentically.

If you prefer a guesthouse, there are many nice options in Cape Town. Guesthouses often offer a cozy atmosphere and can be found in different parts of the city. Jardin d'ébène Boutique Guesthouse* I particularly liked (advertisement) in Tamboerskloof. It is quietly but centrally located and offers a beautiful garden to relax in.

Find accommodation options using this map:

Airbnb and private accommodation also have their advantages. You can often use a kitchen and cater for yourself. This is especially convenient if you are staying for a longer period of time. I once rented an apartment in Sea Point. It was great to have breakfast on the balcony in the morning and enjoy the view of the sea.

My recommendation is to combine the different options. This way you can experience different parts of the city and enjoy the benefits of each type of accommodation. Whether it’s a boutique hotel, guest house or Airbnb – Cape Town offers the right accommodation for every taste. It's worth booking in advance to secure the best seats and enjoy the trip to the fullest.

Practical Cape Town tips

Cape Town is a great destination for pleasure seekers and slow travelers. However, there are some practical tips that you should definitely follow. Safety and health are particularly important. In the city, you should always be alert and not carry valuables openly. It is also advisable to use taxis or Uber, especially in the evenings. Although the drinking water in Cape Town is safe, it can still be a good idea to drink bottled water.

Best time to travel

The best time to travel to Cape Town is the South African summer from November to March. Then the weather is warm and sunny, ideal for outdoor activities and beach days. In winter, from June to August, it is cooler and rainier, but the city still has its charm. If you want to avoid the crowds, the spring and fall seasons are a good choice.

Apps

Useful apps and websites can make travel planning much easier. I like to use the “Cape Town Travel Guide“ App to get information about attractions and events. Uber is indispensable for safe and comfortable rides in the city. Trailforks gives good tips for hikes and outdoor activities.

I also find the Cape Town Tourism website very helpful as it provides comprehensive information about the city, current events and practical tips. Google Maps is also important for navigation and finding interesting places.

When traveling to Cape Town, I have always benefited from being well prepared. By paying attention to safety and health, choosing the best time to travel and using useful apps and websites, your trip will be even more enjoyable. My personal Cape Town travel tip

A special place in Cape Town that you won't find in every travel guide is the Woodstock district. It is just a few minutes from the city center and offers an exciting mix of art, culture and history. My personal travel tip is a visit to the "Woodstock Exchange“, a creative hub for artists, designers and start-ups.

I discovered Woodstock by chance during one of my stays in Cape Town. I was looking for an original gift and ended up at the “Woodstock Exchange”. Here I not only found unique works of art and designer pieces, but also got to know some of the artists personally. These encounters were inspiring and showed me a completely different side of Cape Town.

A highlight in Woodstock is the “Old Biscuit Mill", especially on Saturdays. The market offers fresh produce, handcrafted products and delicious street food. On my first visit, I tried a delicious burrito and chatted with the stall owners. This personal experience made the market visit particularly valuable.

Another experience in Woodstock was a street art walking tour. Local guides led me through the streets and told the stories behind the impressive murals. It was fascinating to see how art brings the neighborhood to life and conveys social messages.

While these experiences in Woodstock may not be found in every travel guide, they offer a deep insight into the local culture and the creative heart of Cape Town. A visit to Woodstock is therefore my personal travel tip for anyone who wants to discover the authentic and artistic Cape Town.
