Kleinwalsertal in spring: When the mountain meadows are in bloom and the valley still seems peaceful

Those who travel to Kleinwalsertal in spring are usually no longer looking for a traditional winter holiday. At the same time, it's still a bit early for many mountain hikes. This is precisely what makes this time of year in the valley so appealing. Between lingering snow on the peaks, the first warm days, and blooming meadows, Kleinwalsertal reveals a more tranquil side.

During our press trip to Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg At the beginning of June, we experienced precisely this in-between time. We were there for the Walser Culinary Days and took away one main takeaway: Kleinwalsertal is particularly worthwhile in spring if you're looking for nature, culinary delights, and early hikes, but don't want to travel in the middle of the hiking season.

However, if you are planning high-alpine tours, expect many open alpine pastures, or want to rely on stable summer weather, early summer is usually the better choice.

You can find more ideas for this time of year in our article about Travel destinations in spring.

During our stay, we were served a menu featuring local ingredients every evening at the former Ifen Hotel. A tip was repeatedly mentioned, which we eventually took up: a detour into the "Wäldele," the side valley that branches off from the road to the Ifen. Without this suggestion, we would have missed one of the most beautiful spring scenes of our stay in the Kleinwalsertal.

Who is the Kleinwalsertal suitable for in spring?

The Kleinwalsertal valley in spring is perfect for you if you're looking for a few quiet days in the mountains, enjoy walking through blooming meadows, and want to go on your first hikes before the peak season crowds arrive. It's also an appealing time for gourmets who want to combine regional cuisine with stunning scenery.

It's less suitable if you're expecting a classic summer trip with mountain huts open all day, long hikes, and reliable warmth. Summer starts later in the Alps. But that's precisely what makes the Kleinwalsertal so charming.

What you can expect between mountain blossoms and remaining snow

Even on the way to Wäldele, we drive past meadows where daisies and hogweed are in bloom. Some slopes look almost covered in white and green patterns. It looks especially beautiful when the morning light hits the side and illuminates the mountainsides.

Gentians, orange hawkweed, and fragrant orchids add splashes of color. Depending on the location and altitude, the scene changes every few minutes. In some places, the flowers are only just beginning to bloom. In others, the meadows are already densely covered with blossoms.

A Overview of when which flowers bloom in the Alps, you can find in this article about alpine flowers.

Why we particularly enjoyed the Wäldele in late spring

In the Wäldele valley, a tranquil side of the landscape unfolds. Here, it's not about grand attractions, but about what happens between the road, the meadow, and the edge of the woods. We drive past mountain huts where hikers are preparing for their day's trek. Jacket is already tucked around the waist to protect against the sun, hiking poles are adjusted, backpacks are in place, and often, it likely contains a snack stuffed with cheese, bacon and bread.

It's precisely scenes like these that make this time of year so appealing. It's not yet crowded. At the same time, the valley is already awake. Bees and bumblebees are out and about, the meadows are buzzing and blooming, and the day feels like a new beginning, without yet feeling like summer.

Horse pastures in the woods

Further along the woods, we passed horse paddocks. There, spotted horses grazed in the meadows, enjoying the fresh grass. They belong to the Hammerer horse farm, which offers horse-drawn carriage rides in the summer and sleigh rides in the winter. For us, it was one of those quiet moments that perfectly capture the essence of spring in the valley. Nothing spectacular, but precisely for that reason, memorable.

The blossoming of mountain meadows is one of the best reasons for a spring trip.

The further we drive into the woods, the denser the blossoms become. It's precisely in moments like these that it becomes clear why the Kleinwalsertal valley is particularly rewarding for certain travelers in spring. Those who enjoy observing, walking, and taking their time will find a time to travel here that focuses less on a itinerary and more on experiencing the world around them.

I would love to run through the meadows among these flowers and take a bouquet home. Instead, I'm left with the photos and the memory of these slopes, which seemed almost overflowing with blossoms at the beginning of June.

You can reach Kleinwalsertal by car from Germany via Kempten and Oberstdorf. You don't need an Austrian vignette, as there is no direct road connection from the rest of Austria into the valley.

Weather and clothing in spring

Spring often arrives hesitantly in the Kleinwalsertal valley. The meadows are already in bloom down below, while snow still lingers on the peaks. Mornings can be cool, but pleasantly warm in the afternoons. Layering is therefore the best approach.

Practical are Thermal underwear for cool hours, a wind and weatherproof jacket and sturdy shoes, for example walking boots, if paths are still damp or soft in places.

    1. Oh yes, that's her. We did not know her before our visit on the weekend and we are very excited. Especially the blooming mountain meadows have done it to us, and of course the culinary specialties :)
