Hotel am Großglockner - the Hotel Kärntnerhof in Heiligenblut

On the way to the Kärntnerhof, our hotel at the Großglockner, in Holy blood you can cross the Hohe Tauern. We got on one of the scenic roads Austria crosses the Hohe Tauern. On the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Although this road connection between the Salzburger Land and Carinthia is only 48 kilometers long, it offers views, museums and mountain huts that invite you to have a snack that you should plan a day for.

Arrival from Munich

We traveled from Munich and had a day to explore the towns along this route. In the evening, we were glad to have reserved a room at a hotel on the Großglockner, the Hotel Kärntnerhof in Heiligenblut. It's located just a few kilometers from the southern toll station of the Großglockner High Alpine Road. The views, the sunshine, and the mountain air ensured that we arrived there happy, but also tired from our tour on the panoramic road over the Hohe Tauern.

Hotel am Grossglockner - feel good at the Kärntnerhof in Heiligenblut

After our road trip over the Hohe Tauern, we look forward to our overnight stay in the 50 plus hotel Kärntnerhof in the Winkl district of Heiligenblut. The hotel is easy to reach from the access road to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. We drive through the center of Heiligenblut down into the valley. That's where the hotel is. We spend two nights here, away from the city center of Heiligenblut and from the traffic of the panorama road. The Fleißner family, who have been running the hotel since the 60s, welcomes us. We immediately feel at home when we are greeted by the hotel owners, Helga and Marietta Fleißner.

The room at the Kärntnerhof, the Hotel am Großglockner

The room is furnished in a country-style style. It offers space for a desk, a seating area, and an armchair. The balcony is large and extends around two sides of our room. We have a table with four chairs and two lounge chairs at our disposal. Our favorite feature, however, is the canopy hanging over the bed. Its colors complement those of the curtains and upholstered furniture.

A country-style hotel

The Hotel Kärntnerhof is tastefully decorated. I like the chair covers in the dining room and the country-style lamps, which convey a cozy atmosphere for a hotel on the Großglockner. We were also impressed by the panoramic pool, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Those looking to unwind in the evening after a hike can also relax in the sauna.

Food for connoisseurs

The cuisine at this hotel on the Großglockner promises culinary delights. On the first evening, we opt for bacon-wrapped peaches and noodle soup for starters, liver with onions, apple, and cranberries for the main course, and quark cream for dessert. On the second evening, we have a shrimp cocktail and cream of cauliflower soup for starters.

I choose pork fillet "Bernese style" with pear and cheese on herb cream, while Petar opts for catfish "Styrian style." It's poached with strips of vegetables and horseradish. For dessert, there are pancakes with apricot jam. The kitchen at the Hotel Kärntnerhof focuses on regional cuisine, and we enjoyed the food. However, we skipped the salad from the buffet and the cheese board because the four courses were already plentiful.

We also liked the fact that we could start hiking directly from the hotel. There is also a lot to discover in the area around Heiligenblut. For example, we decided to visit the Gold digger village, which is located outside of town. You can definitely spend several days at this hotel to get to know the surrounding area and the town.

Those planning to do so can use the Grossglockner High Alpine Road free of charge for a minimum stay of seven nights. Upon arrival, you will receive a confirmation of your stay from the hotel. This confirmation must be presented at the toll booth and you will then receive a ticket for the panoramic road. If you wish to visit other points along the route later, you will need the Carinthia Card, which you get at the hotel. However, if you only spend two nights in a hotel in Heiligenblut, you pay less toll.
